How to Start a Career in Tourism in Bangladesh

Tourism is one of the few industries in Bangladesh where you can start with practical skills instead of a specialised degree. Travel agencies, airlines, hotels and tour operators all hire people who can serve customers well and handle the systems behind a booking. This guide explains the main career paths, the skills employers look for, and how to take your first step.

Why tourism is worth a look

More Bangladeshis travel abroad every year for work, study, Umrah and Hajj, medical treatment and holidays. Domestic travel to Cox's Bazar, Sylhet, Sajek and the Sundarbans keeps growing too. Every one of those trips needs someone to plan it, ticket it, book the stay and look after the traveller. That creates steady demand for trained staff in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet and beyond.

Five career paths to consider

  1. Air ticketing and reservations. You book and issue flight tickets using a Global Distribution System (GDS) such as Sabre, Amadeus or Travelport. This is the most common entry job at travel agencies.
  2. Tour operations. You design and run tour packages: transport, hotels, guides and day-by-day itineraries, for inbound, outbound or domestic travellers.
  3. Hotel and resort work. Front office, reservations, guest relations and sales roles suit people who enjoy working face to face with guests.
  4. Airline and airport services. Ground handling, check-in, customer service and sales offices hire for clear communication and calm problem-solving.
  5. Tour guiding. If you know a region well and enjoy storytelling, guiding can grow into a freelance business.

Skills employers look for

  • System skills: GDS ticketing, fare calculation, and online booking tools.
  • Product knowledge: visa basics, airline rules, baggage policies and popular destinations.
  • Communication: clear written and spoken English and Bangla, on the phone and by email.
  • Accuracy: a wrong date or misspelt name on a ticket costs money, so attention to detail matters.
  • Customer care: patience with worried travellers and the ability to fix problems quickly.

Your first steps

  1. Pick one path to start. Air ticketing is the fastest route into a travel agency job for most beginners.
  2. Get practical training. Choose a course that gives you hands-on practice on a real or simulated GDS, not just theory.
  3. Build proof of skill. A certificate plus a few practice bookings you can explain in an interview counts for more than a long CV.
  4. Start where you can learn. A small agency often lets a newcomer handle more tasks, which builds experience fast.
  5. Keep learning. Fares, visa rules and regulations change often. People who stay current get promoted.
